Cruise line protection
vs. independent insurance

Cruise-line protection is convenient, but convenience does not necessarily mean it offers the best protection for your particular trip.

Independent travel insurance, including plans available from Travel Insured International, may provide higher medical limits, greater flexibility and protection for more than the cruise itself. Protect Your Travels helps you compare before you buy.

CoverageTypical cruise-line protectionTravel Insured International
Trip Cancellation✓ Often covers 100% for specified covered reasons✓ Up to 100% of insured trip cost for covered reasons
Trip Interruption△ Limits vary considerably by cruise line✓ Up to 150% of trip cost on Deluxe and Platinum plans
Emergency Medical△ Limits can range from relatively modest to substantial✓ $50,000 to $500,000, depending on plan
Emergency Medical Evacuation△ Limits vary substantially by cruise line and plan✓ Robust evacuation protection available
Flights & Hotels△ Depends on what is insured and the cruise-line program✓ Eligible non-refundable flights, hotels and other trip costs can be included
Baggage & Personal Effects✓ Usually included, with plan-specific limits✓ Up to $2,500 on Platinum, with optional enhancements available
Trip Delay✓ Usually available, with varying limits and waiting periods✓ Available, with benefits varying by selected plan
Missed Connection✓ May be included✓ Available on Worldwide Trip Protector plans

THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE MAY BE

Medical coverage

Medical emergencies can become extremely expensive during international travel or when emergency transportation is needed. Cruise-line protection varies dramatically.

Travel Insured plans

Essential $50,000 medical

Deluxe $250,000 medical

DETAILS MATTER

What about Cancel For Any Reason?

Some cruise lines provide a future cruise credit when you cancel for a reason that is not otherwise covered. That can be valuable, but a future cruise credit is not the same as receiving money back.

Eligible Travel Insured plans may offer optional Cancel For Any Reason coverage. Current qualifying Worldwide Trip Protector options can reimburse 75% of insured non-refundable trip cost, subject to policy terms, deadlines, eligibility requirements and exclusions.

CRUISE-LINE PROTECTION

Advantages

  • Extremely easy to purchase during the cruise booking process
  • Can provide solid protection, particularly when medical and evacuation limits are higher
  • Some programs provide future cruise credits for cancellations that are not otherwise covered
  • Convenient when the primary concern is protecting the cruise purchase

Potential disadvantages

  • Coverage levels vary substantially from one cruise line to another
  • Medical or evacuation limits may be lower than some independent plans
  • The protection may be less customizable
  • Non-cruise portions of the vacation require careful review
  • Some cancel-for-any-reason benefits are future cruise credits rather than cash reimbursement
INDEPENDENT INSURANCE

Advantages

  • Choice of several coverage levels
  • Potentially much higher medical coverage
  • Strong trip interruption and evacuation benefits
  • Ability to insure eligible prepaid, non-refundable components of the entire trip
  • Optional coverage enhancements may be available
  • Eligible plans may offer Cancel For Any Reason and Interrupt For Any Reason options

Potential disadvantages

  • Coverage must be selected carefully for the individual trip
  • Some optional benefits increase the premium
  • Certain benefits have purchase deadlines and eligibility requirements
  • Coverage varies by plan and state of residence

SO WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Protect more than your cruise.
Protect Your Travels.™

There is not one answer for every traveler. A cruise-line plan may be appropriate for some vacations. For expensive cruises, international or longer trips, and vacations involving airfare, hotels and tours, an independent comprehensive policy may offer advantages worth considering.

We can help you review your cruise-line protection and compare it with independent travel insurance options. There is no obligation to buy.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you buy.

Are these three products the same thing?+

No. Travel medical focuses on covered care while traveling. Trip cancellation focuses on eligible prepaid trip costs. Evacuation and rescue focuses on getting you from a difficult location to appropriate care. Some plans combine benefits.

When should I purchase coverage?+

As early as practical. Certain benefits may only be available when coverage is purchased within a stated period after the initial trip payment. Always review the plan requirements.

Can I buy completely online?+

Yes, when a provider offers online enrollment. You can also request licensed assistance before purchasing.

Is every situation covered?+

No. Every plan has conditions, limits and exclusions. The policy certificate is the controlling document.
